A track entitled “What It Feels Like” featuring Jay-Z and the late Nipsey Hussle is set to drop Friday. The record will be a part of the soundtrack to the highly anticipated film Judas and the Black Messiah–a film that documents the events leading up to the assasination of the legendary civil rights activist Fred Hampton. Actor Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Widows) stars as the slain leader opposite LaKeith Stanfield (Atlanta, Sorry to Bother You). The film has garnered a ton of awards buzz and its soundtrack looks to live up to the hype.

Some other artists that are featured on the soundtrack include Nas, Black Thought, ASAP Rocky and Rakim. There are also a handful of artists native to Chicago featured (the city that Fred Hampton came to prominence in) such as G Herbo, Polo G, and BJ The Chicago Kid. Acclaimed Producer Hit-Boy executively produced the project alongside Dash Sherrod, Ryan Coogler, and Archie Davis. The collaboration between Nipsey and Jay-Z will be uncharted territory. Neither artist had the opportunity to work with the other during Nipsey’s lifetime. Nipsey’s placement on the soundtrack makes perfect sense due to the fact that his unfortunate death parallels that of Fred Hampton’s–as both figures were ultimately betrayed and murdered by someone close to them.

The soon to be released track “What It Feels Like” follows the posthumous visual album experience released last Friday from the Nipsey Hussle Estate celebrating the hip hop legend’s life. Fans of the Crenshaw rapper have had a fair amount of new material to dig into so far in the new year. With Judas and the Black Messiah releasing in theatres and on HBO Max this Friday, fans do not have to wait long to get their hands on the anticipated film and accompanying soundtrack.
