Let’s get right into this ‘Big Auntie 2’ album review from Clinton, Lousiana’s Jeania of 2 Gutta.
Fitting Jeania of 2 Gutta would take one the moniker ‘Big Auntie’. The first obvious trait; Jeania is a veteran with a down pat delivery, style & direction.
Big Auntie 2 noticeably starts off with a mixtape-type intro that goes into the most “turnt” record, “On That Time” featuring Jab. A formula so familiar it literally feel like it’s missing DJ Drama, especially given how many Southern artists he’s introduced in this fashion.
The party continues with “I’m Like That” featuring Level & La Tray and “Hit The Pressure” and “D.O.T” with Jube.
At this point, you’ll notice not only the quality but continuity in production. The through line seems to be lil627madedadbeat, who is listed as beat maker, producer and/or composer on every single track. Actually, given the mixtape approach ‘Big Auntie 2’ could have easily been listed as a rapper, producer collaboration. E.g. Larry June x Alchemist ‘The Great Escape‘.
Production style could be described as nineteen-ninety-now. There’s a nostalgic essence without an attempt to return to a time in a retro fashion. Like if Charles Barkley played into today’s NBA at 28. We’d recognize his O.G. aura while playing in right how’s game.
‘Big Auntie 2’ slows down around “No New Vibe” Jeania of 2 Gutta tone’s changes as she speaks from a heart that seems to be on the verge of breaking, asking: “Is it a vibe or lie?“. A cheating man who is emotionally unavailable has our main character falling in love with a merage. The aforementioned track and the proceeding one-verse “She Missing” add a necessary layer and dynamic to Jeania.
If there’s one knock on ‘Big Auntie 2’, outside of the nondescript features, it’d be slight redundancy. It doesn’t take away from the potency of the tracks but at some point you may say, ok “we get it”. Even the added layer previously mentioned is returned to in “Tell Me Yes” featuring Aunitra. It seems Jeania may have 2 modes; “outside” and “in love”. Throughout ‘BA2’, Jeania mentions being “woke” and “conscious”. Adding a bit of that third side could’ve not only made the 16-track output seem shorter but gave Jeania of 2 Gutta a true standout attribute.
But wait.. there’s more..
We say “if” at the top of the last paragraph because when you are establishing artists, sometimes they have to be a caricature of who they will eventually become. For example, Megan Thee Stallion was ultra one-dimensional, even sonically on ‘Tina Snow’ and especially ‘Fever’. Pop Smoke strictly did New York drill-style music on ‘Meet The Woo 2’. Both would expand production and themes on the debut albums, respectively.
The album closes out with “We Love Dancers” and “Close To Me” featuring K Luv. Appropriate, given what we just established about the album. One more time to “turn up” and one more to be love-stricken.
What may have not been emphasized enough is Jeania of 2 Gutta is a rapper, rapper. She’ll likely be an underrated lyricist by way of her aura & for some her accent but she has proved to profound in the simplest of ways on ‘BA2’. “I ain’t losing friends, I’m losing extras” and “You don’t want it with me I see demons in the mirror“, for example.
Jeania of 2 Gutta should continue to ascend if ‘Big Auntie 2’ is any indication.
